What are raster and vector graphics? And how are they different?

Raster definition.

Raster graphics are digital images created with pixels. Since raster is made with pixels the image can lose quality when the image in enlarged and the pixels also show a lot more when enlarged also. Raster is mostly best for complex and detailed colored images. Using raster would be better for photographs like a movie poster or selfies.

Vector definition.

Vecotor graphics are digital images defined my mathematical formulas. These images dont become pixelated or lose their quality when they become enlarged. Vector is mostly best for simple images that dont require much colors. Using vector would be better for a companys logo and a sticker.

Differences.

Whats the difference?

While they both have certain things their good for, raster and vector are still very different. Raster use JPG, PNG, and GIF type files while vector uses SVG and PDF. Raster tends to be better with designs with complex shapes and many colors/gradients when vector is for more simplier and noncomplex designs. Raster tends to use larger files than vector, but vecto file are more flexible to work with tahn raster.

--> Advantages Disadvantages
Vector Gives you infinite scalability without losing quality, Small file size, Easy to edit and manlipulate, Sharp and clean edges when done.Limited realism, High complexity, Compatibility and browser issues, Difficult conversion.
Raster Can display complex designs, Easier for digital photography and detailed images, Allows precise manipulation, fast processing for specific data.Image becomes more pixalated when bigger, Larger files, Limited scalability, Difficult editing.

Used in production.

Vinyl Sticker

  1. Make a simple sticker design in inkscape.
  2. Convert all of the text in the design to paths.
  3. Export the image as a SVG file.
  4. ...
  5. ...
  6. ...

Scanner to Vector

  1. Draw and color any design you'd like to do on a piece of paper.
  2. Put the picture into the scanner and wait for it to scan.
  3. Import the picture into the Inkscape.
  4. Click onto the picture and go to path, then click trace bitmap.
  5. Clean up the lines with your traced image.

Large Poster Printing

  1. Design a poster in inkscape with one or two graphics.
  2. Use images in your poster that have high-resolution.
  3. Export the poster as a PNG at 300 DPI.
  4. Send the exported file to a large-format printer.
